Digital Literacies Project:

Digital Poetry

This project is designed to be a culminating activity for a 6^th grade poetry unit.

CCSS:

ELA-Literacy.W.6.4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

ELA-Literacy.W.6.5: With some guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach.

ELA-Literacy.W.6.6: Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of three pages in a single sitting.

Introduction: What is digital poetry? Digital poetry uses technology to add dimension, motion, and personalization to a poem. Students are introduced to Prezi and examples of Digital Poetry on Prezi. Students will watch the Prezi tutorial.

Poem Selection: Next, with the examples in mind, the students are asked to pick two poems that they wrote in this unit that they would use for this project. One poem is what they think would work best and that they like the most, and a second as a back up in case the first doesn’t work out. The poem selected for this project should be a strong poem with at least one form of figurative language.

Brainstorming: Next, the students will sit down with their poem and write down ideas for presenting. For example, which lines are on which slides? Are there any pictures you want to put in? Colors?

Time to Rock and Roll: Start creating the digital poetry project on Prezi. The tutorial is available for a quick reminder of how to create their own. The teacher will walk around and make sure all students are assisted as needed.

Partner Share: Once the presentation is designed, students will find a partner to help them perfect their digital poetry. All students are expected to share their project and give advice to their partner’s project. Final touches are completed during the partner share and for homework.

Presentation: Students are to come to class ready to present their masterpieces. They are expected to have fun while presenting, but also to give their undivided attention to the presenter. Digital Poetry Projects will be graded based on preparation, completeness, overall appearance, as well as figurative language in the poem.
